Note: This article is about the original Slay the Spire and assumes Ascension 20 and an attempt to beat the Heart.
This continues my series on key Defect cards that don’t rely on rares. So far, I’ve covered Loop, Sunder, and Recycle.
Part 4 covers the uncommon Power, Heatsinks.
It’s an important card for making the Heart fight more stable.
It greatly improves the Defect’s slow start

The Defect is a character that wants to get through its deck as quickly as possible and get its Powers into play as early as possible.
This card is a perfect fit for that goal.
A slow start is one of the Defect’s weaknesses, but if you can play Heatsinks, the Defect’s start in combat improves dramatically.
Its upgrade priority is very high
Its upgrade priority is very high. Upgrading doubles the number of cards you draw, and the speed is completely different.
The more Powers you have, the more it matters. It’s a perfect match for Creative AI
The more Powers your deck has, the more important this card becomes.
In particular, it’s a perfect match for Creative AI. Every turn, the Power that Creative AI generates turns into a draw card.
It’s also strong and easy to use when you’ve taken Amplify or Echo Form. If one of these makes you play a Power twice and Heatsinks+ is already in play, you draw 4 cards. It’s like getting to play Skim+ for free.
If you get Bottled Tornado, choose Heatsinks
Heatsinks is a card you want to play as early as possible in combat. So if you obtain Bottled Tornado, I recommend choosing Heatsinks.
It tends to be dead weight in Act 1
On the other hand, in Act 1, when you don’t have many Powers, it tends to be dead weight.
Again, if you expect to make it through Acts 1 and 2, it’s reasonable to pick it up early. If not, prioritize cards that are better suited to the early game.
Two copies are fine, but you don’t need it if you have few Powers
Personally, I think it’s a card you can have two copies of.
That’s because it hurts when it sinks to the bottom of your deck in an important boss fight. With two copies, the risk of both sinking goes down considerably.
However, in a deck with a low density of Powers, it becomes a card you don’t need. Personally, I think you can add Heatsinks if you have about four Powers besides it.
I hope this helps!
